Equipment

  • parchment lined baking sheet
  • sharp knife or pizza wheel
  • pastry brush

Ingredients

  • 15 oz pie dough enough for a double crust pie
  • ¾ cup jam or fruit preserves
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 12 pairs candy eyes

Instructions

  • Take the pie dough out of the freezer and allow to rest on the counter at room temperature according to package instructions.
Make an egg wash by whisking together 1 egg with a splash of water. Set aside.
Mix the cinnamon and sugar together in a small bowl and set aside.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • When the dough is pliable, roll out the first crust. Cut off the edges of the circle of dough about 2-3 inches deep (reserving for use later) to form a rectangle.
Then cut the rectangle of dough into 6 equal rectangles.
Add a heaping tablespoon of jam into the center of one of the small rectangles and spread evenly leaving about a half inch border.
Use a pastry brush to brush the egg wash along the border. Then use a sharp knife or pizza wheel to cut some of the remaining pie dough (from the edges cut off) into strips. Arrange these strips across the pie to resemble mummy bandages. Then use a fork to crimp down the edges, sealing the filling inside.
*You can use a knife or pizza wheel to trim down and rough of jagged areas.*
Brush more egg wash over the top (trying to keep it just on the crust) then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and place on the parchment lined baking sheet.
Repeat this process until all of the dough has been used up.
*If you're using a double crust pie dough you should get about 12 mummy hand pies.*
  • Place the pies in the oven and bake at 400 degrees F for 15-18 minutes until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and allow then to cool just slightly before adding a pair of candy eyes to each pie.
Serve hot or cold and enjoy!
