Equipment
- Parchment lined baking sheet
- Sharp knife or pizza wheel: I like using a pizza wheel because it makes cutting the strips that much easier.
Ingredients
- Pie dough: You can always make and roll out your own dough. However it you want to make it easier I highly recommend going for store bought. I like the flavor and ingredients in Immaculate brand pie dough. Be sure to get the double crust package so you'll have enough for your mummies.
- Jam or Fruit preserves: Use your favorite brand and flavors or make your own! This recipe works especially great with my Apple Pie Jam.
- Egg: You'll need this for the egg wash.
- Cinnamon Sugar: To make simply mix a little cinnamon with some sugar for sprinkling on top.
Recipe FAQs
Absolutely! Simply use your favorite gluten free pie crust and it should work exactly the same.
Yes! I think the mummies are adorable but this process will work for any shape you choose. I also like using a pumpkin shaped cookie cutter to make these into pumpkin hand pies.
Technically no, the pie will still bake without the egg wash. However the egg wash gives it a beautiful golden brown finish and allows the cinnamon sugar to stick on evenly.

Recipe
Mummy Hand Pies
Equipment
- parchment lined baking sheet
- sharp knife or pizza wheel
- pastry brush
Ingredients
- 15 oz pie dough enough for a double crust pie
- ¾ cup jam or fruit preserves
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp water
- ¼ cup sugar
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 12 pairs candy eyes
Instructions
- Take the pie dough out of the freezer and allow to rest on the counter at room temperature according to package instructions. Make an egg wash by whisking together 1 egg with a splash of water. Set aside. Mix the cinnamon and sugar together in a small bowl and set aside. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- When the dough is pliable, roll out the first crust. Cut off the edges of the circle of dough about 2-3 inches deep (reserving for use later) to form a rectangle. Then cut the rectangle of dough into 6 equal rectangles. Add a heaping tbsp of jam into the center of one of the small rectangles and spread evenly leaving about a half inch border. Use a pastry brush to brush the egg wash along the border. Then use a sharp knife or pizza wheel to cut some of the remaining pie dough (from the edges cut off) into strips. Arrange these strips across the pie to resemble mummy bandages. Then use a fork to crimp down the edges, sealing the filling inside.*You can use a knife or pizza wheel to trim down and rough of jagged areas.*Brush more egg wash over the top (trying to keep it just on the crust) then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and place on the parchment lined baking sheet. Repeat this process until all of the dough has been used up. *If you're using a double crust pie dough you should get about 12 mummy hand pies.*
- Place the pies in the oven and bake at 400 degrees F for 15-18 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow then to cool just slightly before adding a pair of candy eyes to each pie. Serve hot or cold and enjoy!
