This strawberry apple crumble is a simple, crowd-pleasing dessert made with fresh fruit and a buttery crumble topping that is baked to golden brown perfection. It's the perfect blend of sweet and tangy and takes less than than 10 minutes to throw together with just a few basic ingredients.

A serving with apple strawberry crumble is on a stack of blue and white plates topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, with a few fresh strawberries and in the background there is a wire cooling rack with a white pie dish of strawberry apple crisp.

At this point I would consider myself an aficionado of all things crumbles and crisps. One of the things I love most about these delightful desserts is their versatility and ease. They don't require any fancy equipment or hard-to-find ingredients. Plus, they're a fantastic way to make use of fresh, in-season produce, allowing the natural flavors of the fruit to shine through.

This Strawberry Apple Crumble is one of my favorite iterations because I love the combination of juicy strawberries with tart, crisp apples. Whether you're serving it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or enjoying it cold for breakfast the next day, this Strawberry Apple Crumble is a comforting treat that brings a touch of homemade goodness to any occasion.

    What is a crumble?

Great question-and one that comes up a lot in the world of cozy, fruit-filled desserts!

A crumble is a baked fruit dessert topped with a streusel-like mixture, typically made from flour, butter, sugar and sometimes oats.

A crisp, on the other hand, is very similar to a crumble but traditionally does include a lot of oats and sometimes nuts in the topping, which gives it a crispier, crunchier texture when baked.

A cobbler is a different vibe altogether. Instead of a crumbly topping, the fruit mixture is topped with biscuit dough, cake batter, or even dumplings.

All delicious-just depends on your mood!

    Equipment

    • 9-10 inch Baking dish: I like to use a pie dish, a cast iron skillet or my Le Crueset au gratin dish.
    • Cutting board and knife
    • Peeler (optional): I love using my Oxo peeler for the pears.
    • Mixing bowl
    • Measuring cups and spoon
Ingredients for a homemade crumble with apples and strawberries is laid out on a white surface, fresh apples and strawberries, oats, sugar, flour, butter, and a lemon.

    Ingredients

    • Strawberries: The sweeter and more ripe the better!
    • Apples: I like using granny smith apples for the added tartness but I've also loved it with honeycrisp You can really use whichever variety you prefer.
    • Lemon: Fresh lemon juice gives it a lovely acidity. You can also use a squeeze of bottled lemon juice if that's easier.
    • Nutmeg: You could also add a little cinnamon or ginger if you'd like.
    • All purpose flour
    • White granulated sugar
    • Brown sugar: Light or dark brown sugar will work.
    • Rolled oats
    • Butter: To make this recipe vegan substitute unsalted butter with vegan butter.
    • Salt

    Recipe FAQs

How will I know when the crumble is ready?

When the fruit filling is bubbling and the crumble topping is a crisp golden brown.

    Can I use frozen strawberries?

Yes. Frozen strawberries will work in this recipe. You don't need to thaw them completely before baking but I do recommend adding in an extra tablespoon of flour or even some cornstarch to thicken the juice as it bakes.

Can I freeze this apple strawberry crumble?

Yes, you can freeze the crumble either baked or unbaked.

To freeze an unbaked crumble simply assemble it according to the recipe then wrap tightly with plastic wrap and then foil.

To freeze a baked crumble you'll first need to allow it to cool completely. Then wrap it in freezer safe packaging (plastic wrap and foil) and freeze.

Both will last up to 3-4 months in the freezer. Then thaw overnight before baking or reheating.

Can I make this crumble vegan or gluten free?

Absolutely. To make it vegan simply substitute the butter for a vegan butter alternative.

To make this recipe gluten-free you can replace the all-purpose flour for a 1:1 gluten free alternative and make sure that you use gluten-free oats.

    Storage Suggestions

Store leftover crumble in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-5 days. You can also freeze for 3-4 months.
