    Ham and Cheese Sliders

Ham and cheese sliders are one of those back-pocket recipes everyone needs. They're quick to assemble, crowd-pleasing, and oh-so reliable. These bake up warm and melty with a buttery, savory topping that makes them perfect for parties, game days, or an easy weeknight dinner.

Three ham and cheese sliders with poppy seeds and herbs on top are stacked on a white plate, with a baking dish of freshly baked ham and cheese sliders in the background.

So there's a popular version of ham and cheese sliders all over the internet that uses Swiss cheese and leans a little sweeter with brown sugar in the mix. While I do love that one, this more savory version is hands-down my family's favorite.

This recipe is no-fail and perfect for busy weeknights, especially on those evenings packed with rehearsals and practices. They also happen to be a great option for potlucks or Super Bowl parties since they're easy to transport, keep warm, and always disappear fast. I love serving them with roasted tomato basil soup, though they stand on their own just as well. Hope you enjoy!

    • Aluminum foil
    • Measuring cups and spoons
Ingredients for ham and cheese sliders are arranged on a wooden surface, featuring ham, cheddar cheese slices, slider buns, butter, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, green onions, and poppy seeds.

    Ingredients & Substitutions

    • Hawaiian rolls: I recommend Kings Hawaiian rolls but you can use the slider bun of your choice.
    • Ham: I personally like using sliced ham off the bone from the butcher counter at my local grocery store. You want to get it cut relatively thin, but it has great flavor. Regular, packaged deli ham works great too.
    • Cheese slices: My family prefers a medium to sharp cheddar for this recipe but you sliced Swiss or Provolone would also be great.
    • Butter: You can use salted or unsalted butter. If using salted butter you can probably omit adding that extra pinch of salt at the end.
    • Green onion: I love using green onion in this recipe as it adds so much flavor. I highly recommend using fresh, but you could substitute with 1 tablespoon of dried minced onion in a pinch.
    • Garlic: Again, I love using fresh but you could substitute with about a teaspoon of garlic powder if needed.
    • Dijon mustard
    • Worcestershire sauce
    • Salt & pepper
    • Poppy seeds: Feel free to omit if you don't have any or don't like them but I think they add great texture and pizzazz.

    Ham & Cheese Sliders FAQs

Can I make these ham and cheese sliders ahead of time?

Yes. You can assemble the sliders and make and store the butter mixture 24 hours in advance. Cover both and refrigerate. When you're ready to bake, warm the butter mixture in the microwave just until soft enough to brush it on and then bake as directed.

How should I reheat leftover sliders?

You can reheat them in the oven at 325°F, loosely covered with foil, until warmed through to help prevent them from drying out. We've also reheated individual sliders in the air fryer and they come out great. I don't recommend warming them up in the microwave as they tend to come out quite soggy.

Could I substitute other meat and cheese combinations?

Absolutely! This slider recipe is incredibly versatile. It'd be great with roast beef and provolone or Swiss cheese, turkey and Colby Jack, you name it.

Two ham and cheese sliders stacked on a white plate, with melted cheese and herbs visible on golden, toasted buns—these ham and cheese sliders are perfect for a tasty snack or appetizer.
