These festive Roast Beef Crostini with horseradish sauce are the perfect bite-sized appetizer for any gathering. They're quick to assemble, full of flavor, and guaranteed to impress your guests with minimal effort!

Slices of baguette are transformed into Roast Beef Crostini, topped with microgreens, pomegranate seeds, and a dollop of cream, all artfully arranged on a green plate as the perfect Christmas appetizer.

Looking for an elegant yet easy Christmas appetizer that's sure to impress? These Roast Beef Crostini have been one of my go-to holiday recipes for years. I first made them for a holiday high tea fundraiser I hosted annually, and they quickly became the most popular savory bite on the table. With a creamy horseradish and green onion sauce, thinly sliced roast beef, and festive toppings, they're as beautiful as they are delicious. Now, I make them every year for Christmas parties, New Year's Eve, and any cozy holiday gathering. They never last long!

A plate of sliced roast beef, two baguettes, small bowls of greens, sauces, chopped green onions, olive oil, and a bottle of balsamic reduction—perfect for assembling Roast Beef Crostini on a light surface.

    Equipment

For this recipe you will need:

    • Sheet Pan: I love these Nordic Ware sheet pans from Amazon.
    • Mixing bowl: I love these nesting Pyrex glass bowls and use them all the time.
    • Measuring cups and spoons
    • Pastry brush: I have this set of silicone pastry brushes. They work great and are super affordable!
A Roast Beef Crostini, a holiday appetizer consisting of a slice of baguette topped with roast beef, a dollop of sauce, and microgreens, rests on a blue plate; a bowl of greens appears in the background.

    Ingredients

    • Roast beef: I like getting freshly shaved roast beef from the grocery store deli. But if you prefer a thicker cut that works too. You could also use leftover roast beef or beef tenderloin.
    • Baguette: One large baguette works great!
    • Green onion: I love the flavor that green onions give this recipe. In a pinch you could substitute chives.
    • Prepared horseradish: I typically use Inglehoffer's thick and creamy horseradish. But you can use extra hot horseradish for an extra kick.
    • Sour cream: Full fat works best.
    • Mayonnaise: I recommend using a good quality mayo for the best texture and flavor.
    • Lemon: A fresh squeeze of lemon really brightens the sauce up.
    • Olive oil: You can brush olive oil on the baguettes before toasting or use a high quality olive oil spray.
    • Balsamic glaze: This ingredient is optional but I love the tang and sweetness it adds. Just a little goes a long way.
    • Micro arugula: Lately I've become obsessed with micro greens. They add great flavor and look so pretty. If you can't find micro arugula then baby arugula works great.

    Step-by-Step Photos

    Time needed: 35 minutes

    1. Make the crostini toasts.

Cut your baguette into ½ inch slices. Then brush with olive oil and bake at 350 for about 8 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Sliced baguette pieces on a baking sheet are brushed with olive oil; nearby are Roast Beef Crostini toppings like microgreens, a jar of oil, balsamic reduction, and a knife.

    2. Make the horseradish green onion sauce.

In a medium size mixing bowl combine horseradish, sour cream, mayo, green onions, a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined.

A glass bowl filled with creamy white sauce and a spoon inside sits next to a small white bowl of leafy greens and a plate with Roast Beef Crostini.

    3. Assemble the roast beef crostini.

Spread some sauce on each crostini. Top with roast beef, a little more horseradish sauce and a couple dots of balsamic glaze. Garnish with micro arugula, pomegranate seeds and a sprinkle of salt and freshly cracked black pepper. Serve and enjoy!

A plate and cutting board with small pieces of roast beef crostini, topped with microgreens and sauce. Bowls of sauce and microgreens are nearby, along with seasonings.

    Make it festive.

I love serving these at holiday parties and Christmas events. Adding a few pomegranate seeds on top really add a festive twist and a nice burst of fresh tangy sweetness.

These are amazing. The beef with the crusty bread is fantastic. I made them for appetizers, but I ended up making a full meal of them. LOL

Hi Maria - Yes, you can totally prep these an hour ahead. I just don't recommend fully assembling them like a full day before because the bread can get soggy and the meat starts looking a little less appetizing. But You can make the crostini and the sauce a day ahead and then assemble everything together before serving. Hope you enjoy!

Hi Lisa - You can usually find balsamic glaze at most grocery stores near the vinegar, salad dressing, or Italian ingredients section. If you can’t find it, you can also make your own by simmering balsamic vinegar on the stove until it reduces and thickens into a syrupy glaze. Hope you enjoy!
